Welcome

This is a refresher for the level 1 course in dysphagia. It reviews the knowledge you need to support and advise school staff, families and other education therapists working with children with dysphagia or feeding difficulties. The Level 1 training you completed was in the area of eating, drinking and swallowing. It was designed to empower and enable you to provide support and resources to your colleagues in this area of practice.

The content was devised to enable all Education SLTs to provide the following services as laid out in the joint Operational Protocol:

  • Monitor and support the implementation of the Eating, drinking and swallowing plan in an educational context.
  • Provide advice and guidance to educational facilities to ensure implementation of Eating, drinking and swallowing plans.
  • Liaise with and refer to Child Development Services or Child Health Services (as relevant) where a referral or review is required.
  • Support Health SLTs to develop an Eating, drinking and swallowing plan.

This follow up learning will review your knowledge on anatomy and physiology, assessing risk, understanding assessment reports and management planning. There are reflection questions and various activities throughout, as well as opportunities to talk with your peers about what you are learning. You will find it helpful to make notes as you go through the course.
