About this Course

Burns and scalds are a leading cause of injury to children in New Zealand.

Children under the age of five most at risk of burns and scalds with hot liquids being the leading cause of injury in this age group. Māori are at increased risk, particularly in the under-five age group, as are males in all age groups.

Following completion of this short course you will:

  • Know how to assess and classify minor burns.
  • Be aware of burn management principles.
  • Know referral criteria for burns requiring hospital/specialist assessment.

It is recommended that you read the National Burn Service document Initial Assessment and Management of Burn Injuries – Guideline (reviewed 2017) in conjunction with this module.

The Australian and New Zealand Burn Association (ANZBA) website also has useful information on a number of topics regarding patient care including first aid, minor burns and severe burns.
