A practical approach to treating insomnia

Session Date:
Saturday, March 25, 2023 - 11:05

In this workshop you will be introduced to a practical approach to treating insomnia in the primary care setting. Brief behavioural therapy for insomnia (BBTI) involves focusing on providing education about sleep (which gives the rationale for the strategies provided), bedtime restriction therapy, stimulus control therapy and relaxation therapy. When compared with cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, it is a strategy that can be implemented in primary care (by the GP or trained practice nurse) in shorter appointment times and fewer sessions.

This workshop will focus on the treatment sessions implemented once the patient with insomnia attends for BBTI with their completed sleep diary. It will not focus on the initial consultation with the patient, which would involve assessing history, co-morbidities, questionnaires and provision of a sleep diary.
