Ankle arthritis can be a debilitating condition for which we now have a range of excellent treatment options catered to people with various functional requirements.

The surgical treatment of ankle arthritis is an exciting area of research as we now head into the 4th generation of ankle replacements. We now have a better understanding of flatfoot deformity as we initially thought it was primarily a tibialis posterior problem, but we now understand that it is much more complex with an array of causes.

The flatfoot deformity is often misunderstood as a difficult problem to treat. In general, most people respond to a range of non-surgical treatment modalities, which include orthotics, physiotherapy and activity modification which should be attempted for 6-12 months before surgical intervention is considered. Most people continue to improve post-operatively with any surgical intervention for up to 12 (sometimes 24) months after surgery.
