FREE WEBINAR: Dr Otis Shirley overviews a practical primary care approach to common lumbar and cervical spine presentations, including how to recognise key pathologies, assess red flags, make an accurate diagnosis, and manage patients appropriately in the community.
Otis will also discuss when imaging is helpful, when ACC may be appropriate, and when referral to a spine surgeon or other specialist service should be considered to achieve the best outcome for patients.
As always, we will answer as many questions as possible.

I am a New Zealand trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the surgical management of adult and paediatric spine conditions. I hold consultant positions at both Auckland City and Starship Hospitals, where I provide care to both acute and elective spine patients.
Upon completing my Orthopaedic training, I was honoured to receive the President’s Award for Best Trainee. I then pursued an adult spine fellowship at Auckland City Hospital before moving to Canada for a year.
In Vancouver, I completed a paediatric spine fellowship at British Columbia Children’s Hospital, where I gained valuable experience in vertebral body tethering, a cutting-edge surgical technique for the treatment of scoliosis in young patients.
As a surgeon with expertise in both adult and paediatric spine conditions, I provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages. In addition to my clinical work, I am also involved in teaching and research, and I enjoy exploring the intersection of skills and techniques from the paediatric and adult spine worlds.
