Obesity is increasingly recognised as a chronic, relapsing metabolic condition rather than a lifestyle issue alone. In recent years, incretin-based therapies have substantially changed the management of both type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management.
This webinar will review the role of GLP-1 receptor agonists and introduce tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, outlining how its mechanism of action and clinical effects differ from existing GLP-1 therapies. Key efficacy data for both type 2 diabetes and obesity will be summarised, including expected impacts on weight, glycaemic control, blood pressure, lipid profiles, and cardiovascular risk.
The session will provide practical guidance for primary care clinicians, covering treatment initiation and dose escalation, pen devices and injection technique, storage requirements, and management of missed doses. Common adverse effects and safety considerations across different patient groups, including older adults, will be discussed, with a focus on supporting treatment tolerability and continuity.
The importance of combining pharmacotherapy with lifestyle interventions, including adequate protein intake and resistance training to preserve lean mass, will be emphasised. Long-term treatment considerations, including expectations around duration of therapy and issues related to discontinuation, will be addressed using brief clinical examples relevant to everyday primary care practice.
As always, we will answer as many questions as we can.
