Understanding the burden and prevention of herpes zoster in patients with cardiovascular risk:
Herpes zoster is more than just a painful rash - evidence links varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation to increased cardiovascular morbidity, particularly in older adults and those with underlying risk factors.
In this webinar, Dr Hasan Bhally will explore the growing body of evidence connecting herpes zoster to cardiovascular events, highlighting the mechanisms behind VZV-induced vascular inflammation.
He will be joined by Dr Rachael Niederer, who will provide insight into the significant burden of herpes zoster ophthalmicus and its association with long-term cardiovascular complications, drawing on both clinical experience and the latest research.
As always, we will answer as many questions as possible during this session.

Rachael Niederer
Rachael is a consultant ophthalmologist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, specialising in inflammatory and infectious eye disease. She leads the Auckland Zoster Study and is a co-investigator for the NIH-funded Zoster Eye Disease Study.
Rachael’s research focuses on herpes zoster ophthalmicus and its systemic sequelae, including cognitive and vascular complications. Her work has identified the heightened risk of stroke following HZO and is exploring how viral and immune pathways contribute to long-term neurological and cardiovascular outcomes.
