Older adults: Fitness to drive, and Osteoporosis

FREE WEBINAR: Health New Zealand presents Te Tiri Whakāro: Sharing Knowledge, a webinar series to support primary care. This webinar will cover two clinical sessions focused on promoting healthy ageing and independence, alongside the standing segment of clinical updates.

Fitness to drive: cognitive screening

A recent review commissioned by the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Office for Seniors demonstrated that common screening tests for cognitive impairment are not correlated with fitness to drive. Dr Skinner will discuss these findings and suggest approaches to assessing cognition in the setting of fitness to drive consultations for older adults.

Osteoporosis: From fracture risk to zoledronate

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are common, yet opportunities to identify and treat people at increased fracture risk are frequently missed. This practical update will focus on the assessment and management of osteoporosis and fragility fracture risk in primary care, including who to investigate, when to initiate treatment, and how to select and monitor therapy. Dr Macharg will provide practical guidance on the use of zoledronate, including patient selection, pre-infusion assessment, administration, monitoring and management of common concerns. The session will draw on updated Aotearoa New Zealand guidance and national HealthPathways, with a focus on translating current recommendations into everyday primary care practice.
