Karen Hoare

Nurse Practitioner

Karen Hoare is Professor of child and youth health nursing and also a Nurse Practitioner.

She works in partnership with four general practitioners at Greenstone Family Clinic in South Auckland. Karen has implemented several models of care into general practice that result in case managing pregnant women, infants, children and young people. The case-managed approach of pregnant women and infants has led to high rates of maternal immunisation for pertussis along with timely immunisations for their infants. Until 2020, she led the school-based health service collaboration between Greenstone Family Clinic and Counties Manukau DHB. This collaboration included NPs and GPs from Greenstone Family Clinic working with school nurses in three high schools in Manurewa, providing them with standing orders, second opinions and on site clinics. The outcome from this initiative was a significant reduction in teen pregnancies over a number of years.
