About this Course

When your patient is diagnosed with a concussion, it's not always easy to know how to best manage them. It can be hard to determine which patients will get better quickly and which patients might benefit from the additional support provided by the ACC concussion services.

The purpose of this short course is to provide best practice information to support more effective management of concussion and provide an understanding of when it is appropriate to refer patients for ACC concussion services.

After completing this short course, you should:

  • Understand concussion and how it fits within the spectrum of brain injury.
  • Be confident in the assessment and management of a patient who presents with a concussion.
  • Be able to provide early patient education to facilitate self-management and a faster recovery.
  • Understand the importance of follow-up consultations at regular intervals for those patients who can be successfully managed within primary care.
  • Understand persistent concussion symptoms
  • Be able to identify those patients that may require more specialised intervention through ACC Concussion Services.
  • Confidently manage a patient's safe return to school, work, and sport activity.
  • Have an understanding of evidence-based risk factors for prolonged recovery from concussion.
